Hythe Civic Society Thank you Lunch - Sunday, 6th December, 2009.

Each year the Society organises a lunch to thank members who help in the Society's activities during the year.

Evelyn Joyce provided the excellent food, Evelyn, June Orrell and Anne Woodward went round with trays of the canapés and Alan Joyce and Ian Hill served the drinks.

The Deputy Mayor, Councillor David Owen  kindly attended the event.

The Chairman, Brigadier John Holman welcomed the Deputy Mayor, and thanked him for his support for the Society.  John then named all the different groups that support the Society's many activities during the year:  the Committee, the Newsletter printer and Distributors, the Town Walk Guides, helpers with Hythe in Bloom, the staff at Oaklands, and the host for our website, Bob Gayler,  - all who help make Hythe the delightful town it is.

The buffet lunch.

Everyone enjoyed the occasion and Evelyn and her helpers were warmly thanked for putting on such wonderful refreshments.

THANKS TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS.

EATON LANDS

 Tree and bulb Planting

Hythe Town Council has started a programme of improvements to Eaton Lands.  This includes planting more trees in the meadow and lots of native bulbs along the footpath edges and elsewhere.

Volunteers were requested to help with the planting. The tree and bulb planting was a great success.  Turnout of volunteers was about 40 on Sunday, 29th and about 20 on Tuesday, 2nd.  8 standard trees, 24 oak saplings and about 800 whips were planted and about 3,000 bulbs sown.  A big thank you to HCS members who were well represented among the volunteers.

Below some pictures of the volunteers for this Breathing Spaces project.

HCS sponsors a talk at the Hythe Festival on the conservation of Uppark and Windsor Castle following disastrous fires.

Mrs. Maureen Lovering  presented a talk "Mars Bars and Ormolu" for the Civic Society as part of their contribution to the Hythe Festival. This was a detailed account of the restoration and conservation of damaged content and structure of two historic buildings, Windsor Castle and Uppark, which had suffered disastrous fires.  Mrs. Lovering is a hands-on expert in the field and it is quite rare for speakers to the society to be actually featured in the accompanying slides. Using 2 projectors she gave both a fascinating and informative account, as the pictures below show.

Ian Hill opens the meeting.

The opening slides show the 2 buildings - Windsor Castle and Uppark.

Warm applause for a most fascinating talk.

HCS sponsors a talk on Front Line Hythe at the Hythe Festival.

Brian Doorne and Mike Umbers presented "Front Line Hythe",  a talk on the defence of this coast through the ages.    Mike covered the many invasions and attempted invasions from Julius Caesar to William of Normandy before handing over to Brian.  Brian then talked about about the threat from Napoleon and its tremendous impact on our local environment - which now benefits from a wonderful collection of historical monuments.  Mike concluded with the impact on Hythe of the threat from Adolf Hitler.  A feast of significant local history!

A re-enactment soldier welcomed visitors for the talk.

A packed hall, and a prompt start.

Street Signs recognise the contributions of 2 significant sponsors of HYTHE in BLOOM.

Posted 30 July 2007

As mentioned in our report of the Fund Raising Boot Fair (below) Hythe in Bloom depends on many individuals and organisations for support.  The contributions of Lawrence and Co Estate Agents and Gopak, have been recognised by signs on the East Street roundabout and the flowerbed at Red Lion Square.

Below are pictures showing the fund raising leader (Sally Chesters) and one of our supporters (Alistair Page) installing the signs.
