The History of Herring Hang

Herring Hang was the name used for smoke houses along the South coast, where the local herring catch was dried and smoked to preserve it.

The original single stonewall cottage with the Cinque Ports plaque in the wall, dates back to the 18th century

and was where the herring catch brought in to fisherman's beach was smoked.

The ‘cottage’ used to be the horse tack workshop and stable for the old Hythe horse bus.

It is now an annexe to the main house and the whole property has been recently re-furbished.

It is only a few minutes walk to the seafront, town centre, canal walks, RH&DR light railway and park.
