Together Day

Tuesday 13th June was a really special day for the two schools in Hythe. As many of you know, Hythe, St Leonard’s Church of England Junior School and Hythe Community School will be amalgamated in September of this year. They will become Hythe Bay Church of England Primary School. This is possibly, the most exciting thing to happen in Hythe for many years. However we are all very aware that we will face a considerable challenge over the next few months bringing the two schools together. So the teachers of both schools decided earlier in the year that the sooner we started the better. Since Easter both schools have been working with Artists in Residence from Kent Creative Partnerships, Roy and Claire Smith on a project entitled A Show of Hands, children in both schools have spent time considering what they want their new school to be like and looking at the joining of hands as a symbol for amalgamation.

The work produced during the term was exhibited in Hythe Library.

The Together Day was an opportunity for children to work in mixed age groups with teachers and other adults from both schools at creative and physical activity. Some children learned to do Rock and Roll dancing, others learned about Japanese culture and others did printing. The caretaker even ran a flower arranging master class  and  the smell of bread baking made very one very hungry.

In fact there were over thirty activities for children to choose to take part in. At lunchtime both schools met on the Community School field and had a giant picnic. The whole day was documented by a small group of children who worked with the artists filming, interviewing and them editing a film.

The day ended with a grand sharing, children demonstrated their skills, talked about their learning and everyone watched the premier of the film the children had made. The day was a great success, everyone had a really good time. It was interesting that children had the chance to get to know new friends and meet adults they had not seem for some years and teachers were able to work together as one team  and get to know children again who they had not seen in years and the general conscientious was we should make Together Day an annual event.
