A common visitor often seen perched on
the warning posts on Groynes are the Cormorants. These magnificent black
birds with a white breast about the size of a chicken are often seen
with their wings outstretched sitting
on the Groyne `buckets' . Since they are wonderful divers and swimmers
it is suggested that they are drying their wings but nobody really knows
for sure.
They often come in land and will regularly be seen on the Royal Military
Canal. Only this year one was seen diving in the canal by the town
bridge and up he came three minutes later with a huge eel in his beak
with he
managed to swallow with some difficulty as it was as long as the bird
himself. |
