Among the visitors to Hythe in recent times has been `Ossie' the Osprey which stayed for a few weeks in September 2005 en route it is thought from Scotland to North Africa. He stopped off for a rest and a spot of fishing on the Royal Military Canal before continuing his long flight. Each day up to a hundred people would gather and watch this magnificent bird of prey make regular swoops at fish in the canal. Some were lucky enough to see him snatch a huge Perch and just about make it up again carrying his prey. There are now many breeding pairs of Ospreys in Scotland in Wales when a few years ago they were extinct. Each pair and their brood leave their roosts up north in September on October and fly over a thousand miles to Spain or North Africa. They often `rest' and feed in Southern England before tackling the long sea journey south. So it is hoped we may see more of this fabulous creature. |
