Walk 6: Total distance 3¾ miles (6 km). Visit the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Light Railway (RH&D) Station. Observe a Sound mirror (fenced off for safety) and enjoy spectacular views from The Roughs before descending to return. Includes a steep 200 ft (70m) climb from the Canal to the Sound mirror.
Details : From Oaklands cross Stade Street keeping to the left bank of the Canal. A footpath runs alongside the Canal to Hythe Station on the Romney, Hythe & Dymchurch Light Railway. From the station cross the Canal by Scanlon's Bridge and turn left into Green Lane. Follow canal path west for 1 mile (1¾ km) until you reach a MoD permissive footpath on your right (this is just prior to the 1¾ mile Hythe marker post). Follow this footpath north up the hill for ¼ mile (0.4 km) to meet an east-west footpath. Turn left (west) and proceed for 200 yards to Sound mirror. To return to Hythe proceed east on the footpath but do not descend back to the canal but continue east to enjoy spectacular views over Romney Marsh and the English Channel. This footpath brings you to the top of Millfields Road. Turn right down road and take the footpath between numbers 12 and 13 to return to the Canal bank. At Canal bank turn left to return to the Light Railway and Oaklands.
