Walk 9: Total distance 5 miles (8 km). A walk along the western foreshore to The Redoubt. WARNING! Always check that the range foreshore is open to the public before proceeding. THIS CAN BE DONE HERE

Although this doesn't sound very interesting, the western forshore runs along the seaward edge of the Hythe ranges and is normally closed to the public. Consequently it holds a wide variety of wildlife that is never seen along the Eastern beach. Details : Leaving Oaklands, walk up Stade Street to the seafront and turn right towards Fishermans beach. Cross Fishermans beach and continue west. AT THIS POINT CHECK THAT THE RED FLAGS ARE NOT FLYING AND THAT THERE IS NO RANGE BOAT OUT TO SEA. You will have to traverse a breakwater and climb the small rocky outcrop at the first Martello tower to reach the footpath, but then the quality of the path is good all the way to The Redoubt, where you can return the same way you have come or return via the Dymchurch Road.
